Class Announcements S.S. SOL MONDAY!Hi Everyone -
Just a reminder - we have our S.S. SOL on Monday, May 24th. PLEASE help your child review for the test over the weekend. We completed a practice S.S. SOL today which students put in their backpack, and the HOME COPY of the CFA/SOL reviews which came home on Monday. Make sure your child gets sleep on Sunday night, and a good breakfast Monday morning. I know Monday's a hard day for an SOL test, but after this one, we only have one more on Wednesday and we are done! :) Thanks for all your help! Pictures, Bell Schedule and Book OrderHi Everyone -
A few things to bring to your attention: 1) Spring Pictures were sent home today for your review. Pictures, or payment, are due by May 14th. 2) The School Board approved the extra 10-minutes for the elementary school only. Our new dismissal time will be at 3:25. This will start on May 10th and will go until the end of the school year. 3) If you would like to order from our current book order, payment and orders are due tomorrow (Friday). I will send a new book order home on Monday. However, as a preview, the author of the Percy Jackson books, Rick Riordan, has a new book out - The Red Pyramid. This is available in hard cover for $10 through Scholastic. Since I have access to the on-line order forms, I can order this book on this book order too! So, if your child would like to order that book on this order, send in cash, or a check to Scholastic Book Club, TOMORROW, and I'll order a copy which we can get in a week or so. I can also order it on the next flyer too, just giving everyone the advanced option to get it sooner :) SOL TimeHere are the test dates for the SOLs:
May 19 - Reading May 24 - S.S. May 27 - Math These tests will start first thing in the morning, so arriving to school ON TIME is more important than ever so the students can prepare for testing day. Help your child to prepare by doing nightly homework reviews, getting a good night's sleep before the test, and a solid breakfast the day of the test. Thanks for all your help! Tests Coming UpI have updated our study guides in the files to the right. I have put in the study guide for our Science Plants test we will be taking on Thursday and I also added the study guide for S.S. Government and Economics of VA. This test will be on Friday.
Happy Studying! 4th Grade MusicalHi Everyone -
I recorded the performance last night and you are able to view all 9 songs on School Tube. http://www1.schooltube.com/Organization/OrganizationHome.aspx?oid=209993 If this doesn't work, go to www.schooltube.com * Under the search button, Look for a School * Type in Antietam and choose our school * All 9 videos from the show are there. There are also some kindergarten videos, so you'll have to make sure you click on the right ones for 4th grade. Email me if you have any problems! -Kathy Reminders and UpdatesSo, we are back! Yay!
Here are some things to remember from before our mid-winter recess :) * Book Orders are due by Friday (Feb 19th) * Jamestown Permission slips and money are due by March 19th Here are some updates: * Our Friendship Party (which was our Winter Party and then our Valentine's Day party.. both snowed out!) will be THIS FRIDAY! If you volunteered to bring something, you'll get a note this afternoon to remind you what that was. If you can't volunteer to bring it in this time, NO BIG DEAL at all (don't let your kids tell you otherwise!). I'm sure we'll be fine :) * We have LOTS of tests coming up so expect many review sheets coming home. We were due to take a bunch of tests right before we left - Solar System, Civil War, Math, and Writing. I will send home review sheets this week for Solar System and Civil War. Hope you are all doing well! Mrs. Lamont Jamestown Field TripPlease return the Jamestown Permission Slip and field trip fee by March 19th. If you need an additional permission slip, you can print one out from the folder 'Jamestown Permission Slip' to the right.
Snow, Book Orders, and Homework :)So, it sounds like we are going to get some snow!
I sent the students home today with a little extra homework just in case we end up out of school for a little time. There are also other activities on this site under Educational Plans. After the kids go sledding, feel free to work on anything there, if you need something extra for your child to work on. ;) Also, I sent home about 5 book order forms this afternoon. They are a combination of orders from January/February/Winter. If you want to order, you are welcome to write just one check for all orders. All orders and forms are due on February 19th. Happy Snow! New Nation Test WednesdayHi All -
I forgot to stress to the kids that we have the New Nation S.S. Test tomorrow morning. The review sheet is under the S.S. File. The students got this last week for review. Also, please remember, school is dismissed tomorrow at noon. Book Orders and TestI will be placing Scholastic Book Orders tomorrow for both the December and the Holiday flyer. If you are planning on purchasing any books, please send money in tomorrow (Friday).
Also, we have our American Revolution test tomorrow. Students have two study guides which were handed out in class on Monday. One of those guides can be found in the S.S. folder to the right. Thanks! Energy HomeworkHappy Monday!
Today the students had a chance to watch me make a complete electric circuit to light a little light bulb. Tomorrow and Wednesday they will make their own circuits - both parallel and series circuits. To go along with this unit, we handed out a homework assignment today that asks you, as a family, to determine how much electricity you use in your home. This assignment requires Internet connection and this website: http://www.csgnetwork.com/elecenergycalcs.html I told the students this was an optional assignment since it requires your help too! So, if you can, try it out with your child and write down how much it costs to run your home. Just write down the values in each box so they can add them up and share with the class. Also, we will have our Colonial VA test on Wednesday. The study guide went home today and it is also posted in the S.S. file here to the right. We have early dismissal on Wed, at noon. Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! :) Writing Logs, You Owe Me, Book ItHi All -
Last week we started our Writing Logs. Students are expected to read every night as a part of their homework. Now, in addition to reading, students must write a short 5-7 sentence summarizing what they read that night. These logs should be done every night after the reading is finished. Writing Logs are due on Friday every week. Therefore, students should hold on to their logs in their assignment notebooks until Friday. Most weeks, there will be 4 entries (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). We also sent home our first 'You Owe Me' sheet yesterday. These sheets should be signed and returned so I know all families have seen what is missing and what still needs to be done. Please sign these and return them to school each week. Book It! The 'Book It' Reading Log came home at the beginning of November. This reading log is just to mark that students have read 20 minutes every night and then one additional night over the weekend. The total for the month of November is 500 minutes of reading. This log should be returned to school at the end of November. All students who complete this optional assignment and hand it in will earn a free pizza coupon from Pizza Hut. If you have any questions regarding any of this, please let me know! :) Bingo BasketsHappy Friday everyone!
As a reminder, Bingo Night will be coming up on Friday, October 30th. Our class basket is almost complete. If you would like to help offset the cost of our class Bingo basket, please send in any cash donations next week. Thanks! Kathy Weather TestOn Friday, we will be having a test on our Weather unit in Science. Today, we filled out and checked our study guide. This paper came home today for studying. If your child forgets the study guide, look in the class files and you will find a completed study guide for this test.
Book Order Reminder and a test!Hi all -
Just a reminder, if you want to order books this round, I'm placing the order this Friday. If not, we do have the school book fair coming up next week - my favorite time of year!! :) Also, we are just about done with our Weather unit in Science. We'll be completing the study guide tomorrow and the test will be on Friday. Scholastic BooksI sent home our first book order form from Scholastic Books. I haven't done this in many years, but the kids seemed excited and I have always loved to get new books. Do not feel you need to buy these books! I have refrained from them in the past since it is sometimes hard to come up with extra money for things like this.
If you would like to order books online, I have set up an account at: www.scholasticbooks.com Click on the Parents bar at the very top. Click on the Quick Links - Book Club Orders Our user name is: MrsLamont (all one word) Our password is: ordernow (all one word) I can't seem to get JUST the October flyer I sent home to show up, but I did open it up to any book level. So, if you would like to order for other children in your house, including preschool kids, you can do so. They will ship to me and I'll send them home with your child. The big catalog I opened up was kinda confusing, so if you would rather just pick something from the October flyer I sent home, feel free! Send in your paper order and a check to Scholastic Book Club and I'll place our order. This order is due Friday, October 23rd. Gunston HallAs a reminder, we will be taking a field trip to Gunston Hall on Monday, October 26th. This information went home this week. Please send in your child's form and payment for $7.00 (checks to Antietam ES) as soon as possible.
S.S. TestWe will be having our first S.S. test on Thursday (see homework). Two study guides went home today with the kids. They can also be found in our Files section (on the sidebar).
Please help your child study for this test. Natural BridgeWe took a 'photo field trip' today!
Over the weekend, my family and I went to Natural Bridge, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I took lots of pictures and I showed them to the kids today. To be honest, it felt a bit like the family slide shows my dad used to do with all our old trip pictures! Hopefully, it was interesting for the kids. We got to 'walk' through Natural Bridge, which is made of limestone. We saw where George Washington, as a map maker (before he was President), plotted out the bridge. We also got to go through an Indian village where the Monacan Indians used to live. We saw their long houses, the catails they used to make the roof, the bark they used for the sides, as well as their kitchen, the animal skins and their tools they used. We also saw pictures of a hot air balloon landing, as we saw that on our way home to Woodbridge on Sunday! So, we also had a small discussion about how hot air rises, which fit in perfectly with our new science unit about Weather. BlogHi Everyone!
We all went to the computer lab to sign into School Fusion. Students now all have their user names and passwords. This information also came home today with the students. If you have questions, email me! Students can now post comments on our blog section. Can't wait to hear from everyone :) Mrs. Lamont Spelling and Weekly ReadersHi all -
This week our students have started their spelling work and our Weekly Readers. These are weekly assignments that will always be due on Fridays. Each student will receive 12 spelling words and a Spelling Contract. Complete 25 points, hand in the contract on Friday and get an A! :) Weekly Readers include reading the mini-newspaper and answering the assigned questions (from a seperate sheet of paper...not just the questionson the back of the WR). Both assignements can often be completed in class during the week, however, some students choose (or will need) to bring them home to complete before Friday. Friday HomeworkHi All -
Just so everyone knows, I will not assign homework on Fridays. The exception would be if we have a test the following week, it would probably be a good idea to study our assigned study guide once or twice. If you or your child are just dying to do homework on Saturday night, you can always have them work on multiplication facts or have them read. You can also check out some of the other websites on our website. HomeworkHi All -
We will be having homework just about every night. Every night of the week students will be expected to read for 20 minutes. This is in the daily agenda as "RTM". There will usually be math homework too. Most likely, you won't find Social Studies or Science since much of this work is done in class together. Check the Monday Folder and you'll probably see some of our work! Science PicturesI just uploaded some pictures of the kids working on our science experiment from this week. Take a look! :)
